NOTE: There are some rather serious questions regarding this family as relates not
only to the correct name of the mother, but also to the names of the children. It may
be that Edward is from a different Thomas and Elizabeth Stevenson than Mary and
Susannah as might be indicated from the fact that the will of Elizabeth Stevenson does
not mention an Edward at all.
1. A letter from the Rev. T. G. Clark of the Rectory of South Croxton under date of
15th Aug 1940 to Noel C. Stevenson states: "In reply to your query re' other
entries of Edward, bapt. Nov. 22nd, 1705, there are none, his is the only name entered."
2. Letter from Phillimore & Co. Ltd. dated 18th May 1948 lists, "From the registers of Ashby Folville,
Thomas Stevenson md. Elizabeth Goadby. [Children]: Mary Stevenson, bap. Barsby 9 Nov 1701;
Edward Stevenson; Susannah Stevenson, bap. Barsby 29 Nov 1708....
3. There is no will of a Thomas Stevenson who could have been our man.
We have searched both the P.C.C. and at Leicester without result.
4. From the parish register extracts we found there was a Thomas Stevenson buried at Ashby Folville on
18th March 1710, and another of the same name buried on 10th June 1717, and a Thomas Stimson buried on
3rd March 1727/8. Mr. Clark is of the opinion that the last named was the father of Edward Stevenson.
He bases this on the fact that Thomas Stimson was buried March 1727/8 coupled with an entry in the Rothley
Court Rolls 26th April 1728 when Edward Stinson was admitted on descent.
With regard to the Stevenson Goadby marriage we find the will of Elizabeth Stevenson of South Croxton, widow, proved in the archdeaconry of Leicester in 1749, and as one of the witnesses was an Edward Goadby this rather suggests that she was the Elizabeth Goadby who married Thomas Stevenson in 1700. From the abstract which we enclose you will see she names her children Thomas, Joseph, John and Mary Berridge and a grand daughter Susannah Stevenson. There is no mention of an Edward Stevenson."
