Mrs. John Waters was City Pioneer
Ishpeming Woman Located in Copper Country in 1865
The many friends of the late Mrs. Waters, widow of the late Captain John Waters, who died Monday evening at the home of her son, Harvey, on South Second street, were grieved to learn of her demise, although it was generally known that her condition was critical for some time past. Mrs. Waters contracted pneumonia two weeks ago.
Mrs. Waters had been a resident of the city since 1870, coming here from the copper country , where she had resided for five years. She was born in Beerslstron, Devonshire county, England, and was married shortly after reaching Hurontown, where Captain Waters was employed. The trip from Detroit to Houghton was made by boat and during her late life the deceased frequently entertained relatives and friends with stories of the early days in the upper peninsula, when most of the settlers came into the district by water.
The remains have been removed to the home of her son, William Waters, First (?) Street, and the funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:45 at the home. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Harry Felton, presided by Dr. H. M. Eldred.
Besides the two sons living here, the deceased is mourned by another son, the Rev. Frank Waters, of South Lyon, near Detroit. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Death has summoned Mrs. Waters, widow of the late Captain John Waters, she having passed from life Monday evening at the home of her son, Harvey Waters, South First Street.
Mrs. Waters was a victim of pneumonia, from which she suffered for about two weeks. Because of her advanced age, it was realized that she could not recover.
Mrs. Waters was born in Beeralston, Devonshire, England, April 28, 1844, her maiden name being Sarah Jane Peardon. She came to the United States in August, 1865, going to Houghton, in the Michigan copper district, where she was married to Mr. Waters immediately after her arrival. Her courtship began at the village of her birth, Mr. Waters having preceded her by three years to this country.
After five years of residence in the copper country, Mr. and Mrs. Waters removed to Ishpeming. In 1889 they moved to the American Mine location, where Mr. Waters acted as mining captain. They continued to make their home here until 1894, when they returned to this city.
Mrs. Waters was the mother of seven sons, William, Henry, John, Edward, Harvey, Al and Frank. In September, 1877, Henry, John and Edward died of scarlet fever, the three passing away within three weeks of each other. Al died five and a half years ago. The husband died in October of 1918.
In 1915, Mr. and Mrs. Waters celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, with four sons and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren present. Three sons, William and Harvey, of this city, and Frank, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at South Lyon, near Detroit, are the surviving relatives of Mrs. Waters' immediate family.
Mrs. Waters was a high type of womanhood and motherhood. She was a life-long Christian, being a member of the Church of England in the land of her birth and of the Methodist Episcopal church in this country. Her loss is deeply felt by her relatives and many friends.
The body was removed to the home of William Waters, Pearl street, from which place the funeral took place Thursday afternoon. Dr. Harry Felton and Dr. M.H Eldred officiating.
